Functions and features
Windows XP
Mac OS
Machine and peripheral management
The whole machine is controlled by the operating system which including all components of the computer. This system also controls all peripherals such as the printer, keyboard, scanner etc.
This is also controlled by the operating system, the whole machine but the difference is that the peripherals are made specifically for mac. 
Security
Windows has security functions such as user accounts with passwords, firewall which protects the computer.
Mac OS has security features such as blocking the ports that could cause issues.it also has a feature that checks if the downloaded software is safe. it also has a time machine which helps with things such as troubleshooting.
File management
Windows XP uses the windows exe. Software to manage files.
Mac OS uses the software finder to manage files. the Mac OS also has cover flow which allows the user to browse their albums.

Device drivers
Windows XP has a device driver which controls all programmes, without this device driver these would not be able to be installed.
Mac OS also has this device driver which controls all programmes however if you wanted to download something new a new device driver would have to be installed.
Ability to customise
Windows XP provides a guide of how to customise your windows XP. This is step by step so easy to follow.
Mac OS the user can customise the system but slower than windows XP and is also at their own risk.
Support for connectivity of portable media
Windows XP has a number of different supports for connectivity such as USB, CD/DVD, Bluetooth etc.
Mac OS also have these same supports for connectivity but specialise more into it. For example they have iCloud allows apple users to connect all apple devices and store data and this also provides back up.
Stability and reliability
Windows XP has an automatic update system which helps with keeping the computer run smoothly.
Mac OS constantly update their software which means that if prevents any problems as these updates are closer together.
Ease of management
Windows XP has three different groups of management which help to control the management of the computer. These are applications, software, system tools and storage.
Mac OS doesn’t arrange its management together like Windows XP does, it is all done separately. For example, if the Wi-Fi needs turning off it will need to be done separately.
Associated utilities
Windows XP comes with certain things such as a Bing toolbar which have your emails etc. This allows the user to access them more easily and quicker.
Mac OS also has certain things such as quicksilver which enables apps to be downloaded quicker. It also has pathfinder which helps sort out all of the users files.
